Planning Commission
|
|
The Planning Commission meets the
first Monday of each month at 7:00 P.M. at the Townhouse.
The Planning Commission consists
of seven members who are all appointed by the governing body. Each member is to
serve a four-year term. Each Planning Commission is empowered to make rules and
regulations for its own organization and administration, though these rules must
be consistent with the laws of the Commonwealth.
The Planning Code requires that,
before any final action can be taken by the governing body, the planning
commission must review and make recommendations on proposed decisions affecting
or relating to the comprehensive plan, the zoning ordinance with or without
planned residential development provisions, subdivision and land development
regulations, and official map. In addition to accepting or rejecting a proposal,
the commission can make recommendations for amendments to planning and related
ordinances.

Zoning Hearing Board
|
|
The Zoning Hearing Board will
hear appeals for the year 2010 on Tuesdays at 7:00 P.M.
The Zoning Hearing Board (ZHB) is
established in the Township as part of the Zoning Ordinance. Its purpose is to
hear appeals from decisions of the Zoning Officer when a building or development
activity cannot meet the literal text of the Zoning Ordinance. For example, if
you wanted to build a garage closer then ten feet from your rear lot line, the
zoning officer cannot issue you a permit unless a variance is issued from the
ZHB. They will conduct a public hearing where you must demonstrate a hardship
why you cannot meet the literal text of the ordinance. The ZHB is comprised of 5
citizens of the Township who are appointed by the Board of Commissioners.
Despite being appointed by the Board of Commissioners, they are an independent
quasi-judicial board.

Civil Service Commission
|
|
The Civil Service Commission is a
three member board of Township residents that oversee the hiring and promotion
process within the Police Department. All sworn law enforcement positions within
the Police Department are civil service positions. The Civil Service Commission
is charged with establishing testing and selection criteria for all applicants
for entry level and promotion positions within the Police Department. When there
is an opening within the Department, the Civil Service Commission schedules a
competitive examination, usually consisting of written, oral, and physical
fitness components, for all candidates. Also, the Civil Service Commission
conducts extensive background checks on potential candidates for police
positions. Once all of the testing is complete, the Civil Service Commission
ranks all candidates and forwards the list of the top three candidates for
hiring consideration by the Board of Commissioners. The Civil Service Commission
meets when necessary.
