Located approximately ten miles from Greensburg, the County Seat, and twenty miles from downtown Pittsburgh, off exit 7 of the Pennsylvania turnpike. The community covers thirty - six square miles and serves as home to approximately thirty thousand residents. The Norwin School District is the result of the 1958 jointure between the North Huntingdon Township Schools and the Irwin Borough Schools, reuniting what was one system in the 1930's. The present Norwin School System consists of six elementary schools, two middle schools, and a senior high school, as well as a central administration building. Approximately 5,100 students are educated in the Norwin School District. The School District is governed by a nine member Board of Directors elected for four year terms at large, in odd numbered years on a rotating basis. The Norwin School District participates in the Federal Food Program. Bus transportation is provided to all students in the Norwin School District who live within the areas approved for transportation by the PA Department of Education in Harrisburg. The school district does not provide mid-day transportation for kindergarten students. In an attempt to provide a variety of opportunities for students throughout the educational spectrum, the Norwin School District provides numerous special programs and services. Included are programs for gifted students, homebound instruction for students with illness, advance placement, college level courses, remedial reading, math, and a full array of special education services. A comprehensive standardized testing program is used by the district in coordination with the overall curriculum. Kindergarten instruction is currently provided on a half day basis to those students who have reached the age of five by September 1st of the current school year. Norwin students have the opportunity to participate and succeed in numerous areas outside the curriculum including a Spring Musical, Marching Band, Chorus, Journalism, Student Council, American Field Service, forensics and nineteen varsity level sports.
