Decks, Fences, Sheds, and Driveways

Driveways or Sidewalks:
- May be located along your property line provided that you are certain of
the exact location of your property line.
- The width of your driveway at the street cannot exceed 25 feet.
- You do not need a permit for a driveway.
- You will need to confer with Penn Dot if the driveway is on a state road.

Decks:
Building permits are required for any and all elevated decks (this also
includes porches and porch roofs). Decks built or constructed on grade are
not required to have a building permit. Steps to deck shall be a minimum
of 36" wide and the riser height shall be no greater than 7
3/4". The minimum tread depth shall be 10". Decks that are
constructed higher than 30" off of grade are required to have a railing not
less than 36" in height. Railings shall not have any open spaces
greater than 4".

Fences:
- You do not need a permit to build a fence.
- Fences may be built on the property line.
- You should be certain of the location of your property line.
- Fences in the front yard cannot be taller than four feet. Please
note that corner lots are considered to have 2 front yards and 2 side
yards. For more information, contact the Planning & Zoning
Department.
- Fences in the side or rear yards cannot be taller than 6 feet, 6 inches.

Sheds
- Sheds that are less than 100 square feet do not require a permit. You may
place the shed a minimum of 5 feet from your property lines.
- Sheds greater than 100 square feet require a permit. You must submit
construction drawings of the shed with your permit application.
- Sheds greater than 100 square feet cannot be built closer than 10 feet
from your side and rear property lines.
- Sheds may not be located in the front yard.

regulations with the Zoning Officer before applying for a permit or before
engaging in any construction.
