Chief ~ Sean Oskin Hartford Heights Volunteer Fire Department had its start in January 1946 at the home of Walter Baird, Sr. on Ardara Road. At this time, 22 men were present and decided there was a definite need for a fire company in the area. An organizational meeting was held a month later at the Miller Methodist Church highlighting the election of permanent officers and shortly after the men voted on the name Hartford Heights for their department. It received its charter in April 1946 and in May, the company formally joined the Westmoreland County Fireman's Association. A converted milk truck was purchased for $300 to serve as the departments first vehicle and kept it in the garage of Walter Baird, Sr. for several months. The members bought the first siren in 1948. In May of 1949, the officers called a special meeting for the purchasing of a new truck. However, the greatest date was on October of 1949 when the company bought a piece of property, now the present site along Route 30, for a fire hall.
