Chief ~ Rick Walker On January 10, 1938, a group of 40 citizens of Shafton and the vicinity held a meeting at the former Shafton school building to organize the Shafton Fire Co. After obtaining the forms from the officers of the "Shafton Fife and Drum Corp", they applied for a charter on July 20, 1938, which was granted in September of that same year. The first pieces of apparatus were two soda acid tanks purchased from North Irwin Fire Company. After a few years they purchased a 500 gallon pumper from American LaFrance Company through Sam Smith, then Chief of Irwin. A year later they purchased a 750 gallon pumper from the city of Erie, and an American LaFrance - 500 gallon pumper with Nitrogen driven Foamite Tanks, and an Oldsmobile Emergency Car. In May of 1946, they sponsored a Fife and Drum Corps of 50 men and boys in uniforms, who attended at least two parades a week. It won the Western Pennsylvania State Fife and Drum Corps championship at Sommerset State Fair. In 1962, members broke ground and built a new Engine Room to house two trucks and equipment.
